Steal The Look: How to Channel Your Inner Elena Gilbert this Season

If you were a teenager in the 2000s, you almost certainly watched The Vampire Diaries. The show was truly iconic between 2009 and 2015. I’m not going to talk about its final years because I’m still genuinely angry about how the series wrapped up. BUT, we’re here to talk about Elena Gilbert’s style and how you can recreate it today.

Clearly, some trends have changed, as has the way clothes are worn, but the essence remains the same.

Elena style (especially in seasons 1–4) defines the late 2000s and early 2010s "girl-next-door" aesthetic. Her wardrobe is practical, casual, and universally relatable, relying heavily on layering and comfortable basics.

Here is a breakdown of Elena Gilbert Signature Style

Henley and V-Neck Tops: Elena is rarely seen without a fitted, long-sleeve Henley shirt (tops with a small buttoned placket at the neckline) or a classic V-neck. She often layers a camisole or tank top underneath, letting the contrasting color peek out at the collarbone.

The Outerwear (Jackets): To add a bit of edge to her soft look, she frequently wears slim-fit leather jackets (usually in black or brown) or casual denim jackets. When it gets colder, she opts for utility jackets or simple zip-up hoodies.Dark-Wash Denim: Her go-to pants are dark-wash, mid-rise or low-rise bootcut or straight-leg jeans. They are practical for everyday school life—and running away from vampires.

Converse Chuck Taylors: For school and casual days, Elena almost exclusively wears classic black or charcoal low-top Converse sneakers.

Knee-High Leather Boots: When she wants to dress up her outfits slightly, she swaps her sneakers for flat or low-heeled brown or black leather boots, usually worn over her jeans. The Vervain Locket: Her most iconic accessory is her antique silver vintage locket given to her by Stefan, which contains vervain. She wears it with almost every single outfit.

So, if you want an autumn wardrobe similar to Elena's, these are the key pieces to look for:

Babydoll Top Long Sleeve

Choose this type of blouse in dark colors, burgundy, wine red, deep blue, purple, and pale pink.

Scoop Neck Short Sleeve Top

Elena pairs her T-shirts with a lace top that she usually wears underneath. This is a very 2000s trend that you can recreate by getting a few key pieces like these:

Elena and lace go hand in hand; these pieces are often essential for recreating the looks of our future vampire girl. If you want to find the lace tops that scream "Elena," here they are.

This is another style of lace top often worn under a long-sleeved top; you can find the perfect dupe here.

As for trousers—bearing in mind that it is the 2000s—straight-leg or skinny jeans in a dark yet washed-out shade are Elena's signature look.

The Elena Gilbert-style trouser dupes that are perfect for you are here:

High Rise Skinny Dark Wash Jeans and Low Rise Dark Wash Jeans

You can pair this type of trousers with leather boots, a pair of white sneakers, or even those famous flats from the 2000s; however, if you want to recreate Elena's autumn look, mid-calf or tall boots would be the ideal choice.

Elena's style is quite easy to recreate; we just need to make sure we have the right pieces that allow us to create hundreds of combinations.

I’ve put together a list of the pieces I consider essential for recreating Elena’s look without spending a fortune. If you’d like to see the full collection, you can click here.
